Storage facilities are not viral. No-one is sharing their monthly 10×10 rental on Instagram. However, ask one who has changed residence, or reduced the size of their house, or inherited the furniture of three generations to come in its defense–he or she will defend that piece of cheap metal as though it were a choice real estate.
The greatest error that people commit is to consider storage as a dumping place. I will get it later becomes a black hole of lost boxes and mystery bags, at a monthly fee. It is not storage – it is costly procrastination. An aged unit, nevertheless, is a true continuation of your living room: tidy, convenient, and, in fact, practical.
The right size will make the difference between intelligent and frustrated renters. The seasonal items and small boxes can be easily handled by a 5×5 unit. Climb on to a 5×10 and you have the size of a garden shed. A 10×10 will comfortably accommodate the items in a medium sized bedroom. Inventory before you sign anything – estimate what you are storing before you spend money, either by guessing the cost of a wasted space, or a unit that can not be appropriately closed.
Climate control is justified by all the additional dollars. Heat warps wood. Electronics becomes costly paperweight due to humidity. Antique pictures will not endure a ruthless summer in an ordinary unit. Everything that cannot be replaced should be kept in a place that is controlled by the temperature such as family heirlooms, business records, musical instruments to name a few. The cost of a standard price versus climate-controlled is nearly always lower than that of replacing the damaged.
Location is not to be underestimated as well. The right facility is on your natural daily path – where you are going to work, where you are going to the shops, where you are going anywhere you are already going. Saving eight minutes per visit will be saved quicker than most people would imagine.
Some organising within the unit is a long way. The bottom boxes are heavy and those above are light. Write on the sides of boxes, but not the tops – tops disappear as soon as you begin to pile. The simplest type of shelf is a wire shelf which doubles your vertical storage without having to spend a fortune.
Clutter is not physical only. It resides in the back of your head, whilst sucking energy.
Other times the wisest thing to do is to get it out of the house – even though that may be merely down the road.
